Israeli occupation authorities destroyed a Palestinian-owned house on Sunday in the Arab city of Lod, in the central district of 1948-occupied Palestine, on the grounds that it was built without a permit according to local witnesses.

Before beginning the demolition, Israeli occupation forces accompanied by bulldozers raided the city's Al-Mahatta neighborhood and closed off all roads leading to the targeted house, which belongs to Palestinian citizen Ibrahim Touri.

Houses and structures in Arab cities and towns in Israel are frequently targeted for demolition, as Israeli authorities make obtaining building permits extremely difficult for Arab citizens.

Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in the occupied territories stated that only 4.6% of new homes built in Israel are in Palestinian towns and villages, even though Palestinians make up over 20% of the population.

The difficulty for Palestinians to have building permits forces them to expand or build homes and structures without permits, which are at risk of being torn down later by the Israeli authorities.

Palestinians in the occupied territories  are those who remained on their land after the establishment of the occupying state in 1948, as well as their descendants. They account for roughly 20% of the country's nine million inhabitants.

Their legal rights are equal to those of Jewish citizens. In practice, however, they face discrimination in employment, housing, policing, and other areas.
