Dr. Karan Raj, who is well-known for his health advice on TikTok, has advised against drinking coffee first thing in the morning, instead recommending us to wait until our natural cortisol levels have decreased.
If you're one of the millions of people who can only crawl out of bed to drag yourself down to the kitchen for a fresh cup of coffee, you're not alone.
So many of us feel as though we can't function, let alone speak to anyone or do any work, until we've had that lovely sip of Joe to satisfy our caffeine requirements.
However, it turns out that we were all wrong, and that we should be letting our bodies perform the work organically.
Dr Karan Raj, who is famous for offering health tips on TikTok, warned on BBC Morning Live that we shouldn't consume coffee first thing in the morning.
"Don't drink coffee first thing in the morning to wake you up," he stated in a TikTok video that was later uploaded. "In the morning, your body normally wakes you up with cortisol, and you get a cortisol spike."
Instead, Dr Raj suggests saving that caffeine hit until later in the morning, once those natural cortisol levels reduce and you're left with a little energy slump.
"Save your coffee until mid-morning when your cortisol levels and your energy levels dip so you get a caffeine boost then and it'll be better," he said.
However, Karan's TikTok followers were left divided, with many commenting to say - like us - that they couldn't possibly imagine being able to get on with their day without a fix.
Aw hell no, gotta have coffee first thing in the morning or we can't be friends," one TikTok user wrote, while another added: "Can I have a coffee first thing AND mid-morning as a compromise?"
Meanwhile, a third joked: "I must have a cortisol deficiency, because it takes me at least half an hour to wake up every morning." We feel you there.
