Maria Sharapova declared her retirement at the age of 32 yesterday, will be remembered in many corners of her sport with respect more than affection.

 

The 32-year-old right-handed Russian-born athlete made the announcement in an essay she penned exclusively for Vanity Fair and Vogue, Her choice of venue shouldn't exactly come as a surprise. Off the court, Sharapova has built a successful career in business and modeling.

 

"I'm new to this, so please forgive me.

Tennis -- I'm saying goodbye," Sharapova wrote on Wednesday

 

"How do you leave behind the only life you've ever known?" Sharapova asks in her essay published.

 

She described the extremes of the game – the "untold tears and unspeakable joys" it brought her, adding that it's "a sport where [she] found a family, along with fans who rallied [her] for more than 28 years."

 

Her goodbye letter to the sport took readers through her journey from early formative years starting out in Russia, moving to Florida to pursue her athletic dreams and ultimately hailed her "mental fortitude" as her strongest weapon and key to her success on the court.

 

She also tweeted: "Tennis showed me the world — and it showed me what I was made of."
