Committee of the budget in the European parliament refused on Wednesday the American decision to end all funding for UNRWA, the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees in 2020.

Anna Fotyga, member of the European Parliament put forward a proposal to cut fund of 100 million dollars, donated for UNRWA by the European Union, taking Poor management as an excuse. This proposal was widely denounced by MEPs.

GUE/NGL member and chair of Parliament’s Palestine delegation Neoklis Sylikiotis said: “There are five million refugees who are now suffering because of the US cuts. Eighty per cent of the people of Gaza depends entirely on Unrwa support.”

European Commissioner Johannes Hahn said: “Without UNRWA and the prospect of a two-state solution, there would just be chaos and violence for both the Israeli and Palestinian people."

The Palestinian ambassador in Proksel said in a press statement: “The Jewish lobby exerts pressure on the European parliament to end the European fun for UNRWA in Palestine and it uses unfounded arguments like maladministration.”

Established in 1949 to take care of Palestinians displaced by the Arab-Israeli war, UNRWA provides essential services for some five million Palestine refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
