JERUSALEM, Saturday, August 24, 2019 - Today, Israeli intelligence summoned Azzam Al Khatib, Director of Religious Endowments Department in occupied Jerusalem.

Azzam is a Jordanian government official, summoned by Israeli intelligence, the Ministry of Religious Endowments said in a statement.

It is believed that the call is related to the last escalation in Al Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site, by Jewish extremists and attempts by the Waqf to prevent the extremists, supported by the Israeli police and government, from changing its status as a Muslim-only holy site.

Jordan is considered the guardian of the holy places in Jerusalem, including the Islamic endowments department, whose employees work in the Jordanian government.
