A senior official in Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Friday conditioned the resumption of the Palestinian Authority political ties with the United States Administration. Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee said in an emailed press statement that if the U.S. expresses commitment to the peace process agreed-upon references in accordance to the international law, ties with US can be resumed. “If the current American Administration wants to resume political contacts with the Palestinian leadership, it should announce that east Jerusalem is occupied and terminate the decision of annexing the city to Israel,” said Erekat. The senior PLO official’s remarks were made in a meeting with an academic U.S. delegation held in Ramallah on Friday. Erekat also asked the U.S. to declare that the goal of the peace process is to reach a solution on the two-state principle in accordance to 1967 border and resolve all the final status issues based on implementing the international resolutions. “These are not Palestinian conditions, but references that had been agreed upon over the past 20 years with the former U.S. Administrations and the whole world agreed upon it,” said Erekat. Political ties between the PA and the U.S. had been severed following President Donald Trump’s declaration in December 2017 that Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Israel and moved the embassy to the city in May last year.
