Several influential US lawmakers have condemned Israel for threatening to expel Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem in favor of hardline settler groups.
“The United States must condemn the violence perpetrated by government-backed Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and make it clear that the evictions of Palestinians are illegal.
Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren called the evictions "abhorrent and unreasonable."
She said, "The Administration should make it clear to the Israeli government that these evictions are illegal and must be stopped immediately."
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, also blasted Israel for the "inhumane" evictions, tweeting: "Israeli forces are forcibly removing families from their homes during Ramadan and inflicting abuse."
Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American congresswoman, spoke out against Israel's conduct earlier this week. "We give the Israeli government $3.8 billion in military assistance per year with no transparency. The Israeli military is currently planning to evict over 500 Palestinians from their homes. We must ensure that no tax dollars from the United States are used to finance this abuse "she said
Cori Bush, an African-American congresswoman, also tweeted: "I've seen what it's like to be brutalized simply for standing up for my own humanity. I am in full solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters who are mobilizing to #SaveSheikhJarrah."
She also urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken to condemn Palestinian attacks.
