The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Riad Al-Maliki, circulated to the Ambassadors of the State of Palestine in various countries of the world, calling for swift action to clarify the position and leadership decision of the foreign ministries, parliaments, parties, decision-making centres and public opinion in the host countries, in order to ensure the holding of elections in Jerusalem.
He stressed the need to call upon States to put pressure on the occupation Power to cease its aggressive exercise and to stop its legitimate and just national rights of our people, to put an end to Israel's disavowal as an occupation Power from its commitment to the signed agreements, including the right of our people in Jerusalem to participate fully in the elections, to vote, to nominate and to promote elections and to mobilize the widest international front to condemn such practices and violations.
Al-Maliki sent the ambassadors of the State of Palestine an in-depth talking point and a basis for discussion and clarification with the decision-making components of the host States, in particular, with regard to the pressure exerted by the European Union on the Palestinian side to expedite the issuance of presidential decrees on the elections and its pledge to exert pressure on the occupation Power to allow the holding of elections in Jerusalem, as a European and international commitment.
He stressed that our efforts continued to mobilize the broadest international pressure on Israel as an occupation Power to ensure that elections were held throughout the Palestinian territory, including occupied Jerusalem, as an integral part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the capital of the State of Palestine, and its legal status has not changed despite Israel's annexation or Trump's decision to recognize it as the capital of the occupation Power.
Al-Maliki stressed to the ambassadors the need to make it clear to the international community that it was Israel that had impeded the elections and prevented them from taking place in the city of Jerusalem, and therefore Israel bore full and direct responsibility for such prevention.
Al-Maliki called on the ambassadors to move quickly to demand that the international community put pressure on the occupation Power to lift any restrictions on the free holding of elections throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the designated areas (c) to respect its international obligations as an occupying Power by ensuring the implementation of this democratic right.
