European Union: New date for Palestinian elections must be set without delay
The European Union announced on friday its opinion at the decision of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to postpone the elections ,and consider it deeply disappointing.
"The decision to postpone the planned Palestinian elections, including the legislative elections originally scheduled for 22 May, is deeply disappointing.
According to the Union's spokesperson in Palestine, Shadi Othman, during media statements followed by the "Gaza Post" news site, Josep Borrell, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, added that "a new date for the Palestinian elections must be set without delay," and that "we reiterate our call to Israel to facilitate their actions."
He added, the EU consistently expressed its support for credible, inclusive and transparent elections for all Palestinians.
The European official continued, "we firmly believe that strong, inclusive, accountable and functioning democratic Palestinian institutions based on respect for the rule of law and human rights are vital for the Palestinian people, for democratic legitimacy and, ultimately, for the two-state solution."
"We strongly encourage all Palestinian actors to resume efforts to build on the successful talks between the factions over recent months. A new date for elections should be set without delay." the European official said.
He said, "We reiterate our call on Israel to facilitate the holding of such elections across all of the Palestinian territory, including in East Jerusalem."
The European official emphasized the EU efforts in calls for calm and restraint from all actors at this sensitive time.
