The leader of the Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, announced that the trial of former President Donald Trump will begin on February 8th.

Schumer said in a statement to the Senate, "The trial will begin after the House receives the indictment against former President Trump next week," adding that "the two parties will begin submitting their studies in the week beginning February 8th."

On January 13, the House of Representatives agreed to hold Trump accountable for his supposed role in his supporters storming the Congress building, and inciting them to storm the building while lawmakers were meeting to approve the results of the presidential election, which was won by Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Following the House resolution, Trump became the first president in US history to open his impeachment file twice, but the issue was not referred to the Senate before Trump leaves office on January 20.
