United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the  President Mahmoud Abbas decrees on holding the legislative and presidential elections in Palestine on May and July.

The Secretary General noted in his statement that "holding elections in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem and Gaza will be a serious step towards Palestinian unity, and to give renewed legitimacy to national institutions, including the democratically elected parliament and government in Palestine."

Guterres called on the Palestinian authorities to support and enhance the political participation of women in all stages of the electoral cycle.

He hoped that holding the elections will contribute to "the resumption of the process towards a negotiated two-state solution on the basis of pre-1967 lines."
