The Korean Central News Agency reported that Mr. Kim's order had been made during a meeting of the country's first ruling party congress in five years on Friday.
He said North Korea must also advance the capability of precision attacks on targets in the 15,000-kilometer strike range, an obvious reference to the US mainland, and improve technology to make smaller, lighter nuclear warheads easier to install on long-range missiles.
"The reality is that when we constantly build up our national defence and suppress US military threats, we can achieve peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula." , Mr. Kim said. "Nothing would be more stupid and dangerous than tirelessly strengthening our power and having an easy-going attitude at a time when we see clearly that the state-of-the-art weapons of the enemy are being increased more than ever," added Mr. Kim.
Whether North Korea is capable of developing such systems is uncertain. Estimates differ widely on the exact state of its nuclear and missile programs. In 2018, North Korea was reported to have up to 60 nuclear weapons, the South Korean government said.
